Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Assessment of Radon Levels.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

309 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that an assessment in 1992 of 63 primary schools in County Sligo by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland indicated 32 schools with radon levels above 150 becquerels per cubic metre, she will immediately institute a similar survey for the primary schools in County Donegal.

Question:

311 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education if radon assessments or measurements have been carried out in primary schools in County Donegal; if so, if she will give the findings; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 309 and 311 together.

Radon tests have not been carried out in primary schools in County Donegal. The Radiological Institute of Ireland is currently assessing the radon levels in domestic properties in County Donegal. When the results of these tests are to hand a decision will be made on whether or not it will be necessary to assess the radon levels in primary schools in the county.
