Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Guidelines for Job Advertisements.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

48 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the guidelines, if any, for employers advertising positions; whether it is allowable for employers to withhold information about the nature and location of the work; and whether an applicant's address can be used as a reason to exclude an application.

There are no guidelines under the auspices of my Department relating to the advertising of positions by employers nor are there any statutory provisions which either require employers to provide information about the nature and location of work in job advertisements or which prohibit employers from excluding persons from access to employment on the basis of their address.

In so far as information about the nature and location of work is concerned, however, I should mention that I have recently brought forward a Bill which will ensure that employees are given such information when they are recruited into employment. The Terms of Employment (Information) Bill, 1993, which is currently at Committee Stage, requires employers to provide information to their employees on a range of employment particulars, including details relating to the nature and location of the work.
