Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Recommendations of the Fair Trade Commission.

John Bruton

Question:

82 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the outstanding recommendations of the Fair Trade Commission, on which action has not been taken, which he has taken up with the Minister for Justice as referred to in his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 162 of 16 November 1993.

The outstanding Fair Trade Commission recommendations referred to by the Deputy relate firstly to the barristers' side of the legal profession and the following issues in particular; allowing lay access to barristers, extending the remit of the independent legal adjudicator to cover barristers, allowing barristers to advertise their services, allowing barristers to form partnerships and other forms of business organisation and allowing barristers in employment to act for and represent their employers. Other outstanding issues relevant to the Deputy's question include reviewing the system of taxation and rules on court costs, the matter of joint legal education and training, greater mobility between the two branches of the profession and the appointment of solicitors as judges.
