Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drainage Works.

Michael Finucane

Question:

97 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Finance if he will have arrangements made to have the Office of Public Works carry out works at a location (details supplied) in County Limerick in view of the fact that works carried out on the river nearby by the Office of Public Works is a contributory factor to the ongoing flooding problem on a passageway, resulting in the erosion of the roadway leading to the houses of persons (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The scheduled works of the Maigue Catchment Drainage Scheme, which have been completed for some years now, have significantly reduced the incidence and duration of flooding in the Athlacca area of County Limerick. The drain, adjacent to the passage referred to, did not form part of the scheduled works as no additional land would have benefited by its inclusion and the works would be uneconomic. The Commissioners of Public Works are satisfied that the drainage works are not a factor in any flooding of the passageway in question. The responsibilities of the Office of Public Works are now confined to maintenance of the completed scheme and the commissioners have no powers to undertake new work to alleviate isolated incidences of flooding such as this one.
