Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Alcoholic Beverages Price Control.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

130 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he intends reintroducing price control on the sale of alcoholic beverages; and if his attention has been drawn to the practices of some in the drinks trade who are arbitrarily increasing the price of drink and, in some cases, restricting competition in the drinks trade by refusing to stock certain competitive products.

I do not propose to introduce price control on the sale of alcoholic beverages. The Director of Consumer Affairs has been asked to carry out an investigation into the reported increase in the price of drink at the end of last year. If the Deputy has further information which may be of assistance to the director in his inquiries he may wish to contact him in this regard.
