Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Employment Appeals Tribunal Delays.

Ivor Callely

Question:

127 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to the delays for a case to be brought before the Employment Appeals Tribunal; the measures, if any, he intends to take to address such delays; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that concerns have been expressed about alleged delays in arranging hearings of cases which are being brought to the Employment Appeals Tribunal.

The Minister for Labour Affairs has drawn these concerns to the attention of the Tribunal and has requested that it address this issue. Subsequently the Minister received a report from the Chairman of the Tribunal on the points she had raised. This is being examined at present with a view to holding further discussions with the Tribunal.

At these discussions, in-depth consideration will be given to possible ways in which the resources of the Tribunal could be used to minimise any delays which occur.

The Deputy will of course, be aware that the unpredictable duration of cases already on hands is one of the main factors which lead to delays in hearing new cases referred to the Tribunal.
