Written Answers. - Irish Troops in Somalia.

Question:

27 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Defence, in view of the health risks pertaining to the area, the rest and leave arrangements being made for Irish troops serving in Somalia.

A medical officer of the Army Medical Corps and a medical orderly are attached to the 80 strong Irish transport company in Baidoa and are available, if required, by any member of the company.

United Nations personnel are entitled to 15 working days' leave and two 60-hour passes during their six months' tour of duty. Saturdays and Sundays are not counted as working days. In addition, travelling time of about two days is allowed. A UN rest and relaxation facility, where bed and breakfast accommodation is provided without charge for three or four days, is available in Mombasa.
