Vol. 438 No. 6

Written Answers. - High Support Community Residences.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

112 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Health the number of high support hostels in Dublin city and county; and the way in which these hostels are run.

The Eastern Health Board is responsible for the provision of health services in Dublin city and county. Within this area, the board provides 17 high support community residences, 11 for persons suffering from mental illness and six for persons with mental handicap. Each residence has an average of ten residents. In addition, over 90 community residences with varying degrees of support are provided by voluntary agencies for persons with a mental handicap.

Community residences form part of the range of community-based facilities provided for persons suffering from mental illness and mental handicap and they have various degrees of support. Other facilities include individual flats and sheltered housing arrangements. The more dependent people live in high support community residences which are staffed on a 24-hour basis by professional and care staff with appropriate support from senior medical, nursing and para-nursing staff.
