Vol. 438 No. 6

Written Answers. - Psychiatric Services Expenditure.

Ivor Callely

Question:

113 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the percentage of the health budget which was allocated to psychiatric services for each of the years 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985 and 1990; and if he will give a breakdown of the budget allocations for capital developments and normal running costs.

The information that the Deputy has requested is contained in the following table. It should be noted that a number of services previously delivered through the psychiatric programme have been transferred to other programmes in recent years. Persons with mental handicap have been transferred to mental handicap centres under the community care or mental handicap services. Many elderly patients have been transferred from psychiatric hospitals to more suitable accommodation in homes for the elderly. A number of acute units have been opened in general hospitals to replace admission facilities in psychiatric hospitals.
