Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Masking of TB Reactions in Cattle.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

38 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the stratagems apparently being used to mask TB reactions in cattle; the information, if any, he has as to the extent and prevalence of this practice; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of allegations that the TB test is being interfered with by use of anti-inflammatory drugs to conceal reactor animals and I have taken steps to establish the extent of the problem, if any, and to monitor for any further abuse. Based on the information currently available to me to date I am satisfied that the practice is not widespread. A specific test methodology is in the course of development, which will facilitate detection and appropriate follow up action.
