Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Petrol Prices.

Frank Crowley

Question:

105 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in view of the fluctuating and differentiating price of petrol, the efforts, if any, that he is making to induce petrol stations to clearly display changing prices, in many cases consumers are unaware that petrol prices vary between garages and find it difficult to determine if they are getting value for money.

The consumer is assisted by the operation of the Retail Prices (Petrol) Display Order, 1986, whereby retailers of petrol are obliged to clearly display the retail price in pence per litre of each grade of petrol on sale at their premises.

The Order is enforced by the Director of Consumer Affairs. Visits by the Director's inspectorate generally result in an outlet's compliance with the regulations. Where there have been continuous breaches the director institutes legal procedings.

During 1993, nine outlets were prosecuted, convicted and fined.
