Question:

114 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the urgent need for new books in County Wicklow, he will consider favourably the request for funding from the Wicklow Library Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 106, 107 and 114 together.

While my Department funds up to 50 per cent of the cost of bookstock for new and improved libraries, the relevant local authority is itself expected to fund ongoing book replacements for existing facilities.

An application from Wicklow County Council for a bookstock grant in conjunction with the refurbishment of Greystones Branch Library is being considered by my Department in consultation with An Chomhairle Leabharlanna. The Council will be notified when a decision on the matter is made.

An application for approval in principle for a new branch library and headquarters at Ballywaltrim was also received from the Council. My Department have requested further information in this regard and on receipt of this information the matter will be considered further.
