Vol. 439 No. 2

Written Answers. - CIE Tontine Case.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

66 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will order an inquiry into the affairs of the CIE Tontine Society which ceased trading in November 1984, with substantial losses to small investors in view of the fact that the High Court recently stopped the trial of a person who had been charged with offences arising from the affairs of the society because of the delay in bringing the matter to court; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to previous replies about this matter given on 27 January 1988 and 22 March 1990 (Vol. 377 col. 150 and Vol. 397 col. 992-993 respectively) which outlined the action taken by the Registrar of Friendly Societies and the Courts. In circumstances where the matter is with the Director of Public Prosecutions it would not be appropriate for me to comment on the recent Court decision or on any matters arising therefrom.
