Vol. 439 No. 3

Written Answers. - Copyright Protection.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

75 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will extend copyright from 50 to 70 years after death, to ensure that our law is brought up-to-date.

The European Council adopted a Directive (93/98/EEC) on 29 October 1993 harmonising the term of protection of copyright throughout the European Union. The term of copyright agreed in this Directive shall run for the life of the author and for 70 years after his death. I will shortly be transposing the provisions of this Directive into Irish law.
