Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Alan Shatter

Question:

208 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education the reason Rathfarnham Parish national school, Whitechurch national school and Edmondstown national school which have approximately 550 pupils have not to date had a remedial teacher made available to them.

When remedial teacher posts become available they are allocated on the basis of priority of need, as identified by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

The needs of the schools in question were considered when extra remedial posts were last allocated in 1993. However, the needs of these schools were not considered to be such priority as to warrant the allocation of a remedial post on that occasion.

The Deputy may be aware of my recently announced decision to appoint an additional 100 remedial teachers with effect from September 1994. The needs of the schools in question will again be considered in the context of this allocation.
