Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Leaving Age.

Ivor Callely

Question:

232 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the studies or research, if any, she has undertaken with regard to the age limits for compulsory education, in particular the school leaving age; if so, the findings; if she has received submissions on the matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Green Paper on Education proposed that the school leaving age be raised to 16 and that a review of the working of the School Attendance Acts would form part of the preparatory work for new legislation in education. This review, which was undertaken by a departmental working group, is almost complete and I expect to be in a position to publish the results of the review shortly.
