Vol. 439 No. 7

Written Answers. - PRSI Threshold.

Ivan Yates

Question:

46 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the changes in the 1994 budget relating to the exemption limits on PRSI and levies have created serious anomalies for employers who employ staff whose pay level is just under £173 per week.

The employer PRSI threshold was introduced with a view of targeting relief at sectors where pay levels were considerably below £173 per week. In my view the restructuring of employers' PRSI has been effective in achieving this objective and has been welcomed by certain employer representatives.

The impact of the levies threshold on wage formation where an employee's gross income is just below the threshold has been brought to my attention and the situation is being reviewed.
