Vol. 439 No. 7

Written Answers. - Foreign Investments.

Ivor Callely

Question:

48 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the estimated amount of moneys that have been taken out of Ireland by Irish investment companies for investment abroad over the last five years.

I am informed by the Central Statistics Office that the estimated net investments of Irish portfolio investors in foreign securities in the years 1988 to 1992 (the last full year for which data are available) are as follows:

Year

£ million

1988

312

1989

791

1990

275

1991

1,069

1992

259

These figures reflect the investments on behalf of Irish clients by the principal Irish-based fund managers (insurance companies, banks, independent fund managers) and investments on own account by insurance companies.
The figures are derived from surveys undertaken by the Central Bank and Central Statistics Office.
