Question:

48 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice if she has received submissions from Ballina Urban District Council and the Garda representative bodies in relation to the need for a new Garda station in Ballina, County Mayo; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 17 and 48 together.

I can confirm that I have received a submission from the Ballina Urban District Council in relation to the need for a new Garda station in Ballina. However, to date I have not received a submission from the Garda representative bodies.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that there are no plans at present to provide a new station at Ballina as accommodation in the existing station is considered to be adequate for the foreseeable future. In recent years two Garda houses have been converted for use as part of the Garda station proper. Shower and toilet facilities have been upgraded and a number of rooms have been decorated.

I assure the Deputy that the situation at Ballina is under ongoing review and the possible need for further refurbishment works will be considered later this year having regard to the availability of finance.
