Vol. 440 No. 2

Written Answers. - Small Claims Court Pilot Scheme.

Ivan Yates

Question:

38 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Justice the number of small claims considered in each of the small claims court pilot scheme areas during 1993; and the plans, if any, she has to publicise the extension of the scheme to ensure that it is widely availed of.

The information requested by the Deputy is not readily available in respect of the period mentioned. The small claims procedure pilot scheme was in operation for a period of two years from 10 December 1991 to 7 December 1993 and statistical information is available regarding the applications received during that time. I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate that information in the Official Report.

As part of my plans to publicise the small claims procedure, I held a press reception in Galway on 6 December 1993 to announce the nationwide launch of the scheme. This resulted in coverage in the national press, television and radio in addition to some local radio and newspapers. I also have plans for the placement of advertisements in national and local newspapers during the coming months.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

40 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice if she will introduce a general exemption for pubs, clubs and licensed premises during the World Cup so that those who are unable to travel to the United States to support the Irish team can join with others to do so at home.

The introduction of a general exemption during the World Cup would require legislation to amend the Licensing Acts. I have no plans to bring forward proposals for such legislation.
