27 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his views on whether in regulating systems of television transmission there are rules laid down in the EC Treaty which must be complied with; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I understand that the Deputy is referring to the competition aspects of Community law in so far as they relate to the provision of multi-channel television by the MMDS companies.
I am satisfied that the MMDS system whereby local franchises are awarded for the provision of the service is in keeping with treaty rules in this area.
