Question:

55 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement regarding the application by Dublin Corporation for sanction for the provision of new internal bathrooms which will not open directly onto the kitchen of existing corporation houses.

Local authorities are responsible for the management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings. Under the bathrooms sub-programme. Exchequer funding is made available to local authorities to assist them to provided sanitary facilities in dwellings which lack them. The upgrading of existing facilities is a matter for local authorities to be financed from their own resources as part of the maintenance and improvement of their dwellings.

At 31 December 1993, Dublin Corporation had been allocated over £2 million towards the provision of sanitary facilities in their dwellings which lacked them. In addition, a total of £34 million had been allocated to the corporation under the remedial works scheme which may include the provision of bathrooms as part of a major refurbishment project. Allocations for 1994 will be notified to local authorities as soon as possible.
