Vol. 441 No. 2

Written Answers. - Purchase of Defensive Equipment.

John Connor

Question:

34 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Defence if he will give details of the amount of money spent on purchases of weapons for members of the Defence Forces in 1993; the amount scheduled to be spent on new weapons in 1994; and the procedures for disposing of weapons each year that are deemed obsolete or no longer useful.

Approximately £4.7 million was spent in 1993 on the purchase and maintenance of items of defensive equipment, including weapons for the Defence Forces and the relevant provision in the 1994 Defence Estimate is £4.63 million.

Weapons which have become obsolete or unserviceable may be destroyed or, where they are considered to have a residual value, offered for sale by tender.
