Vol. 441 No. 3

Written Answers - Mammography Services.

Liz McManus

Question:

170 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health the number of dedicated breast units in Munster; if he has satisfied himself with this provision; in which areas in Munster he intends to provide more dedicated breast units; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Dedicated breast clinics in the Munster areas are held at the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital, Cork and at Ennis General Hospital. At other hospitals in the region, patients are seen at the surgical out-patient clinics and priority is, of course, given to urgent cases. Mammography services in the region are provided at Nenagh General Hospital, Ennis General Hospital, Limerick Regional Hospital, Waterford Regional Hospital, Tralee General Hospital and the South Infirmary/ Victoria Hospital, Cork.

The development of further dedicated breast clinics in the area would be a matter for the health agencies concerned having regard to their competing service priorities for development and the resources at their disposal.

The Deputy will appreciate that global expenditure figures for the GMS have only recently become available and these, together with the more detailed data on activity in the GMS scheme during 1993, are currently being examined by the GMS (Payments) Board.

The information requested by the Deputy is not yet available in the format detailed. I will communicate this information to the Deputy when it becomes available to me.
