Vol. 441 No. 3

Written Answers - Drug Cost Statistics.

Alan M. Dukes

Question:

76 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Health the cost of prescriptions to the GMS for the anti-depressant drug Prozac in each of the years 1992 and 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The cost to the GMS of the drug Prozac was £1,042,105 in 1992. The full year costs for 1993 are not yet available to my Department; however the cost for the first nine months was £628,107. I understand that the figures for prescribing frequency in the scheme indicate that the use of this drug has increased; however, because of a significant reduction in price in 1993, this increase has not resulted in a similar increase in cost.
