Vol. 441 No. 3

Written Answers - Meeting re. THORP.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

134 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Commission called in Paris by Ireland and Denmark has taken place; and, if so, the decisions which were taken in respect of the start-up of THORP at Sellafield.

The Deputy is probably referring to a request made by Ireland and Denmark in February last that a special meeting of the Paris Commission for the Prevention of Marine Pollution, or of its Working Group on Radioactive Discharges, or of another suitable group should be held to consider the matter of the UK's implementation of Recommendation 93/5 dealing with radioactive discharges from nuclear reprocessing plants. Subsequently, on 21 March 1994, at the first meeting of the Paris Commission PRAM Group (Programmes and Measures), Ireland, Denmark and Iceland made strong statements condemning the UK's non-compliance with Recommendation 93/5 as it relates to the THORP plant at Sellafield. However, the UK and France confirmed their reservations on this particular Recommendation.

This matter will again be raised by Ireland and other countries at the June, 1994 Paris Commission meeting.
