Question:

144 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the intake of student nurses for each of the years 1990 to 1993; the estimated intake for 1994; the proposals, if any, he has to increase the number in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of new entrants to nurse training courses registered by An Bord Altranais in the four basic divisions of the register for the years 1990 to 1993 is set out in the table following.

The autumn 1994 and spring 1995 ceilings for general and sick children's nurse training and the 1994 ceilings for mental handicap and psychiatric nurse training are being determined at present and have not yet issued to the individual training schools. However, it is not envisaged that the total student nurse intake will increae during 1994-95.
