Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - Kerry Schools Amalgamation.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

40 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has for the future amalgamation proposals of Moyderwell Convent secondary school and Balloonagh Convent secondary school, Tralee, County Kerry; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In 1989 my Department proposed, and the Mercy Order agreed, that the long term needs of Tralee Post-Primary Centre would be best served by an amalgamation of its two post-primary schools in Tralee, at Moyderwell and Balloonagh, into a single post-primary school, to be based on the Balloonagh School site, extended and adapted as appropriate.

The Mercy Order has now proposed to my Department that the amalgamation would be best effected through the building of a completely new school on a site in the Balloonagh area which the Order has purchased.

The combined enrolment of the two Mercy secondary schools in the current school-year is 1,206. My Department is examining the Mercy Order's proposal in the light of the longer-term needs of Tralee post-primary centre as a whole and further discussions will be held shortly with the Mercy Order.
