Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Schools Register.

Paul McGrath

Question:

119 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to introduce a register of approved driving schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no proposals to regulate on a statutory basis the business of providing driving instruction. However, the two national organisations representing driving schools and driving instructors were invited in May 1991 by my Department to establish a voluntary registration scheme for driving instructors in association with the Irish Insurance Federation. My Department has offered guidance in the matter and has met with the bodies concerned on a number of occasions. My understanding is that the two bodies are about to finalise details of a registration scheme which will then be discussed with the Irish Insurance Federation. While my Department would have no part in the running of the scheme, it will continue to offer help and guidance in bringing the scheme to maturity.
