Vol. 442 No. 1

Written Answers. - Penalties for Non-violent Crime.

Michael Lowry

Question:

26 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for Justice the progress made in advancing the greater use of non-custodial penalties for non-violent crime as promised in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997.

In accordance with the commitment in the Programme for a Partnership Government I propose to bring forward proposals in relation to the greater use of non-custodial penalties for non-violent crime.

As the Deputy may be aware this is one of the issues which arises in the context of a review being carried out by the Law Reform Commission on sentencing and I understand that the commission will report on that matter in the near future. As soon as the commission completes its work on sentencing the question of any possible amendment of the law will be addressed.
