Vol. 442 No. 1

Written Answers. - BSE Research.

Pat Upton

Question:

86 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total amount of money spent by his Department in research into the cause, prevention and other aspects of BSE.

There is not a specific budget for research into BSE. My Department participates fully in the ongoing work of the European Union's Scientific Veterinary Committee and of international organisations like OIE in relation to this disease. Bilateral contacts are also maintained with countries which have reported BSE cases. In this way and by participation in international seminars, my Department keeps fully abreast of all aspects of BSE.
