Question:

2 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the names of the Irish members on the Committee of the Regions; the number of times it has met to date; and the issues which have been discussed.

The names of the Irish members of the Committee of the Regions are as follows: Ms Deirdre Bolger, Ms Betty Coffey, Mr. Aodh Flynn, Ms Mary Frehill, Mr. Tony McKenna, Mr. Patrick Moylan, Mr. Frank Nash, Mr. Jimmy O'Loughlin and Mr. Sean O'Neachtain.

The Committee met in plenary session on 9-10 March, 5-6 April and 17-18 May 1994. At its inaugural session on 9-10 March the committee elected its Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Bureau members. Two of the Irish members, Mr. Tony McKenna and Mr. Sean O'Neachtain, were elected to the Bureau. Since then the committee has discussed and adopted its draft rules of procedure has examined other issues pertaining to its internal organisation.

The committee has also discussed a number of draft legislative and other Community proposals including those relating to the Cohesion Fund, voting and standing rights in local elections, Community initiatives under the Structural Funds, trans-European networks, and educational and youth affairs.
