Vol. 443 No. 1

Written Answers. - Non-availability of Statistics.

Jim Higgins

Question:

39 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Taoiseach the reason statistics are not available for the number of part-time or full-time farmers since 1986.

The following table from the 1991 Census of Agriculture provides data on the number of farm holders in each county classified by annual labour input. The 1991 Census of Agriculture was conducted using a new methodology and hence comparable data for earlier periods are not available. Comparable data on trends in the numbers of farmers in each county are only available from the Censuses of Population. Relevant data from the 1991 Population Census are currently being prepared as part of the final processing stage of that census and should be available towards the end of the year.
