Vol. 443 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ireland-Romania Adoption Treaty.

Alan Shatter

Question:

29 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health the up-to-date position with regard to the completion of an adoption treaty between this State and Romania; and when he anticipates the proposed new arrangements will be implemented.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

146 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Health the up-to-date position regarding the foreign adoption agreement between Romania and Ireland.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 146 together.

My Department has concluded consultations with the Romanian authorities on future procedures for the adoption of children from Romania by Irish residents. I am currently in the process of arranging for the text of the proposed agreement to be considered by the Government prior to its being brought before this House for approval in accordance with Article 29 of the Constitution. Subject to this, I would hope that the agreement will be signed before the summer recess.
