Question:24 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Education if she has examined the report from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment on reform of the leaving certificate; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In May 1994, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment published a consultative paper entitled Assessment and Certification in the Senior Cycle — Issues and Directions with a view to having the widest possible debate on assessment and certification at senior cycle. The NCCA will consider responses on the issues raised in this document before giving its formal advice to me as Minister.
I welcome this consultative paper as an important contribution to the debate on a significant aspect of the restructuring of the senior cycle programme and I look forward to receiving the final report and recommendations of the NCCA.
In the meantime, it would be inappropriate for me to comment in detail on the substance of the consultative paper.
