Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Achill (Mayo) Coastal Erosion.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

112 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make funds available to prevent further coastal erosion at Dugoort Post Office, Achill, County Mayo, in view of the fact that the level of erosion has accelerated considerably over the past year.

The funding available to the Department of the Marine in 1994 has been fully allocated to a number of protection schemes, including a dune management project at Bertra Beach, County Mayo. It will not be possible to make funding available for any further projects this year.

Mayo County Council has informed the Department of erosion problems at Dugoort and Golden Strand. Consideration will be given to undertaking protection works at Dugoort in future years subject to available funding and having regard to economic, environmental and ecological impacts.
