Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - National Lottery Funding.

Austin Currie

Question:

200 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education the amount of national lottery money granted, from the inception of the scheme to date, to organisations in the Lucan, County Dublin area; and the organisations which received such funding.

Grants from the proceeds of the national lottery are paid by my Department to vocational education committees in respect of youth and sport activities at local level. These grants cover the following areas:

Youth and Sport

Grants are allocated to local clubs to cover the cost of administration, coaching and equipment expenses.

Special Projects

Grants are allocated in respect of projects aimed at young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

All these grants are distributed by the vocational education committees in accordance with guidelines issued by my Department. Consequently, it would not be possible to quantify the amounts approved for the Lucan area.
The following are the grants allocated to County Dublin Vocational Education Committee for this purpose: 1988, £61,000; 1989, £61,000; 1990, £47,300; 1991, £61,000; 1992, £40,000; 1993, £70,000; 1994, £70,000.
The position regarding the allocation of national lottery funds by the Youth Affairs Section to Lucan is that up to 1991, the section's grants to Lucan Youth Service were included in a general allocation for the provision of youth services in the Clondalkin-Ronanstown-Lucan area. A separate grant for Lucan Youth Service was allocated from the lottery funds at the disposal of the Youth Affairs Section each year since 1991 under the terms of the grant scheme for special projects to assist disadvantaged youth — details are as follows:
Grants to Lucan Youth Service 1991-94: 1991, £18,485; 1992, £22,620; 1993, £24,000; 1994, £24,975.
