Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

Michael Finucane

Question:

209 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education the intended date of appointment and the school at which the shared remedial teacher will be appointed for schools (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I recently announced the allocation of 100 remedial posts for primary schools with effect from 1 September 1994, bringing the total now in place to 1,133.

It is intended that these posts should be available to the selected schools from the commencement of the 1994/95 school year, in September next.

The actual selection and appointment of the remedial teachers is a matter for the board of management of the base school in each case.

The base school for the group of schools referred to by the Deputy is Ballyhahill national school, Roll No. 18326.

Question:

210 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request for the appointment of a shared remedial teacher for schools (details supplied) in County Limerick; if so, the reason this appointment was not sanctioned; if she will review this decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Earlier this year, I announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial posts for primary schools, which will bring the total in place to 1,133.

The posts have been allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate. My Department did receive an application for a remedial teacher from the schools mentioned by the Deputy but, unfortunately, the schools were not successful on this occasion.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years.

The needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
