Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Services.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

212 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the number of schools in County Kerry that are without the services of a remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Earlier this year, I announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial posts for primary schools. All 100 posts have now been allocated and the appointments will take effect from September next. This will bring the total remedial posts in place to 1,133.

The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate.

This recent allocation of posts means that an additional nine schools in County Kerry have the services of a remedial teacher bringing the total number of schools with a remedial service to 86. This means that 76 per cent of pupils in County Kerry now have the services of a remedial teacher. Sixty-three schools in County Kerry do not have the services of a remedial teacher.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years.
