Written Answers. - Driving Tester Recruitment Campaign.

Question:

44 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the recent recruitment campaign for driving testers; the number who applied; the number who remained in the contest after each of the recruitment procedures, such as initial interview, driving test, essay report writing test, oral Irish exam, final interview and medical; the numbers selected; if any of these persons are driving instructors; the experience and qualifications of successful applicants; and the total man hours involved in the whole recruitment procedure.

The recent open competition for positions as driver tester was held by the Civil Service Commission who have provided information as follows:

Number who applied 642.

Number of eligible applicants 557.

Preliminary Interviews

Number called 557.

Number attended 475.

Number qualified 340.

Practical Driving Test

Number called 340.

Number attended 326.

Number qualified 128.

Main Interview

Number called 128.

Number attended 128.

Number qualified 42.

All candidates attending the main interview were required to undergo a written test. Candidates' performance in this test was taken into account by the interview board.

In lieu of a medical examination a health declaration will have to be completed by any candidate who comes under consideration for appointment.

Oral Irish examination

The oral Irish examination is an optional test.

No appointment has been made to date.

Number of persons selected who are driving instructors.

Experience and qualifications of successful applicants.

The Civil Service Commissioners give a strict undertaking to all applicants that their applications (which include personal details such as their academic qualifications and experience) will be treated in the strictest confidence. Consequently it is not possible to supply this information.

Total man hours involved 1,300 approximately.
