Vol. 444 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 7, 8, 1, 15, 16 and 17. It is also proposed, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders, that: 1. business shall be interrupted at 12 midnight tonight; 2. Nos. 7 and 8 shall be decided without debate; 3. the proceedings on No. 1, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 12.30 p.m. and any amendments from the Seanad not disposed of shall be decided by one question which shall be put from the Chair and which shall, in relation to amendments thereto, include only those set down or accepted by the Minister for Justice; 4. the proceedings on Report and Final Stages of No. 15, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 5 p.m. by one question which shall be put from the Chair and which shall, in relation to amendments, include only those set down or accepted by the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht; 5, the proceedings on Committee and Remaining Stages of No. 16, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 7 p.m. by one question which shall be put from the Chair and which shall, in relation to amendments, include only those set down or accepted by the Minister for the Marine; 6. the proceedings on Committee and Remaining Stages of No. 17, if not previously concluded, shall be brought to a conclusion at 12 midnight by one question which shall be put from the Chair and which shall, in relation to amendments, include only those set down or accepted by the Minister for Finance; and 7. Private Members' Business shall be No. 22 and the proceedings thereon shall be brought to a conclusion at 8.30 p.m.

Is the proposal in No. 1, that business be interrupted at 12 midnight, satisfactory?

In view of the fact that the request under Standing Order 30 to have the crisis at TEAM Aer Lingus discussed in this House has been refused, I propose an amendment to No. 1: that one hour be set aside at the end of Private Members' time today to enable the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, Deputy Cowen, and Opposition Deputies to make statements on the crisis that faces TEAM Aer Lingus. I believe that would be in order and I hope the Taoiseach will agree to it.

I regret that I cannot entertain the amendment suggested by the Deputy. He is introducing new matter and I need hardly remind the House that under our Standing Orders it is the prerogative of the Taoiseach to specify the business of the day.

On that point, I am asking the Taoiseach to agree to my proposal. Perhaps the Chair might put it to him?

That is a distinctly separate matter.

I am trying within the powers available to us on this side of the House to have this matter debated today.

The Deputy may not introduce new matter at this time.

It is at the discretion of the Chair to enable the Taoiseach to respond to my request.

Question put: "That business shall be interrupted at 12 midnight tonight".
