Vol. 444 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Inner City Unemployment Statistics.

Tony Gregory

Question:

67 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare the percentage increase in the number of unemployed in Dublin's inner city over the past two years.

Statistics on claims for unemployment payments are not kept in a way which would provide the information requested by the Deputy. Unemployment statistics are compiled by reference to the local offices where the claims are processed rather than by the area of residence of the person concerned. For example, the figures for the Department's centre city local office in North Cumberland Street are 13,702 in May 1992; 13,324 in May 1993 and 10,624 in May 1994. It must be borne in mind, however, that the figures include people living in many other districts outside the city affected by the movement of numbers of claims between that office and other Dublin offices.
