Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Approval for Additional Teacher.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

25 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the appointment of an additional teacher at Clonea national school, Clonea Power, Carrick-on-Suir, County Waterford, in view of the increased enrolment in the school and the demographic trend projected for the coming years. [1162/94]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with an agreement on staffing negotiated between the Department, the INTO and management bodies.

The enrolment of Clonea national school on 30 September 1993 was 121 pupils which warrants a staffing in the current year of a principal and three assistants.

In the circumstances, I do not propose to sanction the appointment of a fourth assistant teacher at this stage.

I understand that the school's enrolment has increased to 132 in the current year and this will warrant the sanctioning of an extra post in September 1995.
