Vol. 445 No. 8

Written Answers. - Appointment of Remedial Teacher.

John Browne

Question:

43 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to appoint a remedial teacher to adult training centres for people with mental handicap. [1035/94]

My Department will respond in a speedy and positive manner to any request for educational supports from training centres for mentally handicapped young adults.

My Department's input into this area is related to the provision of such teaching hours as may be required to meet the needs of those attending the centres. Grant-aid is provided for instructors in Vocational training centres for moderately mentally handicapped adults which are established by the health boards or voluntary organisations and which have Department of Health approval. The subjects covered include literacy and numeracy, horticulture, arts and crafts, etc.

My Department also provides grant aid for the development of literacy and numeracy skills to centres run by the Rehabilitation Institute for young adults with a physical or sensory disability or with a mid mental handicap. If any particular centre currently requires additional educational supports, it should submit its proposal to my Department where the matter will be considered without delay.
