Vol. 446 No. 1

Written Answers. - Substitute Teachers.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

130 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if she will define the term untrained as applied to substitute teachers in national schools; if she can confirm that the term untrained applies only to persons with certain minimum qualifications or if any person may be employed as an untrained substitute teacher in a national school. [1677/94]

Any person not possessing the qualifications required under the Rules for National Schools to teach in a national school is regarded as untrained.

Substitutes are required to be qualified under the Rules for National Schools. Where it is not possible to obtain a qualified substitute, the services as substitute of a person, who though not qualified under the rules is otherwise deemed suitable, may be accepted.
