Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Phoenix Park Racecourse.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

274 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht in view of the concerns expressed by residents of Dublin 7 and Dublin 15 about the recent planning development of the former Phoenix Park Racecourse, and in view of the strong desire of the communities directly affected that the Phoenix Park Racecourse be retained as a break between the city and the county, if he or the Office of Public Works will consider the possibility of bringing into public ownership the Phoenix Park Racecourse as an adjunct to the Phoenix Park to ensure that it will be retained for posterity as open space and suitable leisure facilities including the possibility of a return of horse racing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2997/94]

As the Deputy is aware, the former Phoenix Park Racecourse is in private ownership and I understand that an application for planning permission for a major development there is currently being considered by Fingal County Council. This property is outside the historic boundaries of the Phoenix Park. There are no plans at the moment to acquire it for the State.
