Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Galway Music School.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

334 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Education whether she will provide finance for the founding of a school or college of music in Galway city. [3085/94]

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

344 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to provide a school of music in Galway; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3156/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 334 and 344 together.

I indicated in replies to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 18, 60, 70 and 71 on 19 April 1994 that my Department had received proposals for the establishment of music schemes and colleges of music from a number of areas including Galway.
I pointed out that the question of approval for such initiatives must have regard to the merits of the case, the prevailing financial circumstances and the overall needs and priorities of the education sector generally.
I also indicated that my Department is conducting a general review of music schemes being operated by Vocational Education Committees.
Pending finalisation of this review, which is likely to take some time, I am not in a position to give a response to this issue.
