Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Edward Nealon

Question:

188 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the need for a shared remedial teacher amongst schools in the parishes of Kilmactigue, County Sligo and Killasser, County Mayo; and if these schools will be included in the next allocations of remedial teachers. [1523/95]

Question:

189 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if she will provide a remedial teacher on a shared basis for seven national schools (details supplied) in County Sligo; if her attention has been drawn to the particular needs of this area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1524/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 188 and 189 together.

I am aware of the cases made by the groups of schools in question in support of their applications for a remedial teacher service.
In 1994 I announced the appointment of an additional 100 remedial teachers to the primary sector. This brings the total number of such posts now in place to 1,133. These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.
I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review and the needs of all schools, including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
