Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Edward Nealon

Question:

191 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education, in view of submissions made to her, her views on the need for a remedial teacher for the national schools at Scoil Chríost Rí, Enniscrone, Kilglass, Culleens and Leafonney, County Sligo; if she will give this grouping priority when next allocating remedial teachers in view of the special needs outlined; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1526/95]

My Department has no record of an application for a remedial teaching service from the schools mentioned by the Deputy. However, if these schools wish to submit an application, their needs will be considered in the context of any future allocation of remedial teaching posts.

In 1994, I announced the appointment of an additional 100 remedial teachers to the primary sector. This brings the total number of such teachers now in place to 1,133.

These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need, following the collection of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate.
I am keeping the question of further remedial teacher allocations under ongoing review.

Michael Creed

Question:

192 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request for additional remedial teachers from a parish (details supplied) in County Cork; and the present position regarding this application. [1533/95]

I have received an application for a remedial teacher service from the schools in question.

In 1994 I announced the appointment of an additional 100 remedial teachers to the primary sector. This brings the total number of such posts now in place to 1,133.

These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need following the collection of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review and the needs of all schools, including the schools referred to by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
