Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Drug Related Offences: Statistics.

Pat Upton

Question:

203 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice the number of people who were convicted for drug-related offences for each year since 1990. [1014/95]

Statistics are not compiled in a manner to distinguish those crimes which are drug-related, in the widest interpretation of those terms, from those which are not. It would not always be possible for investigating gardaí to say for certain whether a particular crime was drug-related.

Statistics relating to persons convicted of offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, are available and are as follows:—

Year

No. of persons convicted for offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977.

1990

1,471

1991

2,265

1992

2,506

1993

2,425

Official figures for 1994 are not yet available.
